Greenville police investigators said Wednesday that an 11 year-old who was killed over the weekend was accidently shot while he and another child handled a gun.
The Coroner’s Office ruled Davius Boyd’s death accidental.
At about 5:45 p.m. on April 28, Greenville police responded to a report of a gunshot heard from a home in the 200 block of Willard Street. Officers said they found Boyd dead from a gunshot wound in his neck just below his jaw.
Detectives said that they determined that, at the time of the incident, Boyd was in the home of neighbors who had left their children, 9 and 12, at home. Police said the 9-year-old was watching television while the 12-year-old and Davius were in the parents’ bedroom.
Police said the 12-year-old went to get money from under his parents’ mattress when he found a gun. They said the gun appeared to be jammed and the boys attempted to clear the jam. Officers said that Boyd was holding the barrel of the firearm to see if something was stuck inside of the barrel, while the 12-year-old held the handle. At some point, the gun accidentally went off, fatally wounding Davius.
