A rare book, believed to have been lost over 200 years ago, has been found in a Charleston library.
The book, “A Dissertation Upon Parties” by Henry St. John Lord Bolingbroke, was published in 1743.
It was recently found in the vault of the Charleston Library Society, which is one of the oldest libraries in the South.
The Associated Press reports that only 15 copies of the book remain in existence, mostly in academic libraries.
The work was part of an 800 volume collection donated to the College of Charleston by planter and diplomat John Mackenzie.
The collection was mostly destroyed by a fire in 1778.
The book will be returned to College of Charleston officials at a ceremony Thursday.
