AAA expects car travel to increase Memorial Day weekend

AAA says it expects car travel to increase this holiday weekend.

AAA estimates that 437,000 South Carolina motorists will travel more than 50 miles this Memorial Day weekend.

That’s an increase of 3.3 percent from last year.

AAA Carolinas CEO David Parsons says declining gas prices are likely a reason for the increase.

South Carolina has the cheapest gasoline in the nation at $3.34 cents a gallon.

The state’s average gas price has dropped 40 cents a gallon since peaking at $3.74 on April 9. Tuesday’s price is 28 cents lower than at the same point last year.

An additional 63,000 state residents are expected to travel by other means over the holiday weekend.

However, AAA says trips are expected to be shorter this year, with an average round trip of 570 miles.

That’s down from 730 round trip miles last year.
