Software company announces 300 layoffs in Oconee County

A water metering company says it will lay off 300 workers from its facility in Oconee County.

Itron, which provides utilities and water companies with metering software and equipment, said the cutbacks are because the company has recently finished several large capital projects in North America.

In a statement, Itron officials said the company will reduce 112 full-time and 189 part-time employees from its facility in West Union. The moves will occur between August 10 and August 24 and again between September 14 and September 28. The company said the layoffs are part of the business cycle and are not related to its health.

“Itron has had and will continue to have success in the smart grid market in North America,” the statement said. ”At the same time, our focus has shifted internationally where momentum is building.”

The loss is significant since the town of West Union itself has roughly 300 residents.

Itron officials say those affected employees have already received notification letters. The company said those impacted employees will receive severance packages in accordance with Itron’s policy. Those employees will also receive outplacement services provided by Itron.
