Corrections officials are searching for a prison inmate who walked away from his work crew doing grounds maintenance at Fort Jackson in Columbia.
State Department of Corrections spokesman Clark Newsom told the Associated Press that 27-year-old Jason Burr was working in a remote section of the military base when he made his escape around 12:30 p.m. Thursday on property that is part of Fort Jackson.
Newsom says officials believe Burr stole a vehicle and may have traveled to Hartsville, where he has family.
He is serving a five-year sentence for receipt of stolen property. Newsom says Burr has a previous conviction for a vehicle-related crime. He was eligible for parole starting July 20.
