Candidates who were disqualified from running in their party’s primary had until noon Monday to turn in their paperwork to appear on the November ballot as a “petition” candidate.
Overall, the South Carolina State Election Commission says 43 legislative candidates filed. Candidates must collect signatures representing five percent of voters in their district in order to be listed as a “petition” candidate. Nominating petitions for local offices are submitted directly to the county voter registration and election offices. Officials must complete the signature verification process by noon on August 15.
So far, election officials have only verified one candidate (Greenville County Democrat Raye Felder). Three others (Greg Hembree, Kevin Johnson, and Tom Young) won their party’s nomination on June 12, but say they are filing the petition paperwork as a precaution.
