Inmate walks away from work detail, spotted in Surfside Beach

Authorities say a 41-year-old inmate who walked away from a work camp in Mt. Pleasant last week was spotted in the Surfside Beach area Sunday.

Surfside Beach Police Department investigators say they need help to find Billy Hanna, who was serving time for Surfside Beach burglaries when he walked off a work detail around noon on September 5. Police say they believe Hanna has committed check fraud in Charleston County since his escape. They also said he prefers to travel by taxi. He is described as a white male standing 6′ and weighing about 200 pounds. He has a shaved head and a deep tan, officers say.

Hanna was assigned to the Coastal Pre-Release Center— a minimum security facility in Charleston. He had been sentenced to five years for grand larceny in connection with the Surfside Beach burglaries.

If you have information about Hanna, you’re asked to call the Correction Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit at 877-896-2258 or the SC Law Enforcement Division at 803-737-9000.
