Greenville resident and U.S. cyclist George Hincapie has announced he used banned substances during part of his career.
Hincapie is an American professional road bicycle racer. He is widely known as the only rider to assist Lance Armstrong in all seven of his Tour de France victories. Hincapie won the Tour de France in 2011.
The announcement comes in the wake of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s plan to release documents about doping use in connection with the case against Lance Armstrong.
In a statement released on his website, George Hincapie said “Because of my love for the sport, the contributions I feel I have made to it, and the amount the sport of cycling has given to me over the years, it is extremely difficult today to acknowledge that during a part of my career I used banned substances.”
Hincapie has been a major motivator in the growth of the Upstate’s cycling events, trails and businesses.
