State Fair finally adds Mexican restaurant stand after 12 years

San Jose stand open for business at the State Fair.

The South Carolina State Fair has begun in Columbia and, as always, there are some new food options this year.

One of the new foods fairgoers can check out is at a San Jose stand. San Jose is a well-known Mexican restaurant in Columbia.

The owner Greg Leon says it took a long time to finally get his spot at the fair.

“It took me 12 years, begging, asking, trying to get out here. The guy that manages the fair is a good customer of mine at my restaurants. So he finally decided to let us in, and we’re excited about it,” he said Thursday.

Leon says he jumped on the offer to have a location. He says the manager ran off a trailer which left a spot open.

Leon says it’s been a slow start for his stand, but he has high hopes that his luck will get better. “People are now just figuring out that we’re new, and we have a lot of regular customers that eat with us in the restaurants that will come by and eat with us,” says Leon.

Also new this year at other stands are fried cheese curds and the “Elvis” Burger, which has peanut butter, bananas, and bacon.

The State Fair runs through October 21. For more information, visit
