The race for the newest Congressional district represents two very different visions for one of the fastest growing regions in South Carolina
That was illustrated in the candidate’s first debate Wednesday night.
Republican candidate and attorney Tom Rice, chair of Horry County Council, and economist Gloria Bromell Tinubu, a Georgetown County native and instructor at Coastal Carolina University, faced off for a local television broadcast and a live audience of about 200 people.
One interchange in the short-answer format, 50-minute debate involved the size of government:
AUDIO: Republican Tom Rice says regulations handicap businesses (:16)
AUDIO: Democrat Gloria Bromell Tinubu challenges Rice’s use of government money (:21)
On economic development:
AUDIO: Rice, a tax attorney in Horry County, is concerned about the unemployment rate in the district (:20)
AUDIO: Tinubu says she is the answer (:09)
The two candidates are philosphical opposites on the role of government:
AUDIO: Rice blasted Tinubu’s view that government is for “the well-being of all members of society, not a select few.” (:29)
AUDIO: Tinubu took issue with that. (:25)
The two will debate again this coming Tuesday at Coastal Carolina University in Conway.
