The S.C. National Guard’s  Detachment 1, Company B, 2-238th Aviation, General Support Aviation Battalion (GSAB) departs tomorrow from McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Eastover. They will be gone for a year.

The unit of more than 60 soldiers includes CH-47 Chinook helicopter pilots, maintenance and other support personnel. They will first travel to Texas for a mobilization period before going to Afghanistan.

“The South Carolina Army National Guard CH-47 unit brings a wealth of experience and this cargo helicopter is a critical workhorse for the commander in the theater of operation,” said Maj. Gen. Lester Eisner, deputy adjutant general for South Carolina. Eisner says the helicopter can operate at higher altitudes and carry higher gross weights than other utility helicopters.

The departure ceremony is not open to the public.
