State law enforcement have arrested a suspect in the killing of a South Carolina State University student at a campus dorm Friday.

Justin Bernard Singleton, 19, of Charleston was charged with murder Saturday.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 20-year-old Brandon Robinson of Orangeburg. Robinson played defensive line for the Bulldogs. The redshirt junior appeared in four games and recorded five tackles in 2013.

SC State president Thomas Elzey’s voice cracked as he told reporters, “We are extraordinarily sad about this. He was a very nice young man. And it hurts… It hurts us all.”

SCSU police chief Mernard Clarkson did not identify Robinson by name, but said the victim was shot outside of the Hugine Suites apartments around 1:30 p.m. He was later pronounced dead at Orangeburg Regional Medical Center.

The State Law Enforcement Division has now taken over the investigation.

Clarkson said witnesses noticed four suspects leave the scene of the shooting. He added that investigators have identified a “person of interest,” but would not identify the suspect or say if that person was a student.

Investigators do not believe the shooters are still on campus or that the crime was random.
