Investigators now say a firefighter who died near the scene of a Conway house blaze Sunday was hit by his own crew’s fire truck.
Christopher Ray was among the Conway firefighters who responded to a structure fire in western Conway Sunday afternoon, according to Horry County Fire Rescue officials. The Highway Patrol told the Myrtle Beach Sun News that Ray fell off the back of the truck on a nearby street, then was struck as the engine reversed and backed over him.
The Horry County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy for Monday. No other injuries were reported at the scene. The home itself was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Ray had been with the Conway fire department since 2010, and left behind a wife and two daughters, according to his fire chief.
