A fire chief in suburban Greenville County has been accused of embezzling more than $20,000 in public money for his personal use.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office says Clear Springs Fire Chief Gregory Merritt took $23,000 in public funds to buy appliances and RV parts for himself. Merritt faces one count of embezzlement and two charges of misconduct.
Clear Springs Fire Rescue is located outside of Simpsonville and typically responds to emergencies in the eastern and southern regions of Greenville County.
The sheriff’s office says it was alerted about the incident back in December after a fire department audit discovered money missing from the account.
Merritt turned himself on Friday and was given a $17,000 bond.
