Wednesday is the start of hurricane season. Tropical Depression Bonnie hit parts of the state even before the season’s start.
University of South Carolina professor of finance and insurance, Greg Niehaus, told South Carolina Radio Network having the right kind of insurance for hurricanes is very important, because most homeowners’ policies don’t cover everything. “For wind damage, water damage would not be covered,” said Niehaus.
He said homeowners can make improvements to their houses to minimize water and wind damage. “Through mitigation and try to protect your home through investments in making the home less susceptible to wind damage or water damage,” Niehaus said.
In addition to high winds, the water that accompanies hurricanes can overwhelm a region and knowing what is covered by your insurance before a major storm hits is a wise idea.
Doing a thorough review of coverage with your insurance agent will make the outcome much easier if a storm hits and damage is sustained.
