Gov. Nikki Haley is backing another opponent in the primary of a longtime Republican state senator.
According to the Rock Hill Herald, Haley is scheduled to endorse Republican Wes Climer, a Rock Hill financial adviser running to unseat state Sen. Wes Hayes, R-Rock Hill. Haley will campaign with the former York County GOP chairman next week.
The endorsement pits Haley against Hayes, who has been in the Senate since 1991 and chairs the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee.
Haley pledged to campaign against lawmakers who have not supported her agenda, particularly on ethics reform or tax cuts. She is also endorsing opponents of Senate President Pro Tempore Hugh Leatherman, R-Florence, and Sen. Luke Rankin, R-Horry. Haley is also backing another candidate running for an open Senate seat against State Rep. Stephen Goldfinch, R-Georgetown.
Unlike the three Pee Dee legislators, however, Hayes has usually avoided publicly criticizing the governor.
