Three South Carolina airports make list of most frequently delayed in the country.
According to WanderBat.com, they are Charleston, Columbia and Myrtle Beach.
The travel information site gathered 2015 flight data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and only included airports that serve at least 5,000 flights annually. The group then identified 85 airports where the site says a flight is most likely to be delayed 15 minutes or more.
The website said 15.2 percent of the departure flights at Charleston International Airport are delayed on average 40 minutes. In Columbia Metropolitan Airport, 16.3 percent of departure flights are delayed on average 47 minutes. At Myrtle Beach International Airport, 20 percent of the departure flights are delayed on average 40 minutes.
Many factors can affect the delays of a flight, like weather, airport location and travel volume.
On average of 15 percent of flights from U.S. airports are delayed 15 minutes or more, the group said.
In general, the size of an airport doesn’t appear to be correlated with the frequency of flight delays. The group theorizes that factors such as weather patterns and geographic region have more impact on the reliability of a given airport.
