Florence Republican Hugh Leatherman has served in the South Carolina Senate for 35 years and will have another chance to hold onto his seat in November’s General Election. He defeated the former party chairman from his home county, Richard Skipper, with 54 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s primary.
Gov. Haley actively supported Skipper in the primary, with her political advocacy organization buying ads against Leatherman. The 85-year-old legislator fought back with a surge of fundraising.
Leatherman is Senate President Pro Tem, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and vice-chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee.
