Charleston city officials have identified a public service employee who was struck and killed by a recycling truck while working Tuesday.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the sanitation worker as 47-year-old Tyrone Comfort. Highway Patrol troopers working the scene told WCIV-TV that Comfort was standing behind the city-owned truck directing the driver to back up when the truck struck and rolled over him.
Mayor John Tecklenburg released a statement honoring the city employee not long after the incident. “Tonight the whole City of Charleston family is grieving the loss of a Charleston Public Service Department contract worker who died this afternoon in a tragic accident involving a city Public Service Department vehicle,”Tecklenburg said. “For now, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone touched by this terrible tragedy.”
Troopers said the collision occurred shortly after 3 p.m on a city block in upper downtown Charleston, roughly a block away from Hampton Park. The driver has not been cited at this time.
