Despite the fact that he is still guiding his city through a recovery from last October’s floods, Mayor Joe McElveen believes there are a lot of good things happening in Sumter.
McElveen told South Carolina Radio Network great things are going on and happening in his city. “Employment is up, our downtown is doing great. Going to break ground on a downtown hotel probably in the next two months,” McElveen said.
He said that as they work on flood repairs they continue to find ways to grow. “Mainly storm drainage lines collapsing in the streets and we still have to deal with that. That’s a major problem right now. Other than that there are a lot of great things going on in Sumter,’ McElveen said.
McElveen was recently in Indianapolis for the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting. “I am co-chair of the Membership Committee and I am also co-chair of the Task Force on Veterans Affairs, that of course is helpful in a community like Sumter where we have a large military facility,” said McElveen. Sumter is home to Shaw Air Force base.
