Authorities say a suspect wanted for murder in Virginia was killed early Tuesday after Lake City police officers said he fired at them during a traffic stop.
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed it is investigating after two Lake City officers shot and killed the man during a stop on Highway 52 just after 1:30 a.m. That suspect was identified as 22-year-old Richard London of Danville, Va.
Interim Police Chief Jeff Johnson said the two officers had stopped London after noticing his car was reported stolen. Johnson said London opened fire during the stop and the officers responded, striking the Virginia man. The Florence County Coroner’s Office said London was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“We are extremely thankful for our brave men and women in uniform here in Lake City,” Mayor Lovith Anderson, Jr., said in a statement. “They risk their lives daily for the citizens of our community and did so this morning.”
SLED is now handling the investigation, as it normally does whenever officers discharge their weapons in South Carolina. The agency said Tuesday’s incident was the 28th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina so far this year.
