Charleston County officials say suspected Emanuel AME Church shooter Dylann Roof is recovering after he was attacked by a fellow inmate in the county jail Thursday morning.
Sheriff Al Cannon said Roof was assaulted as he walked to shower at the county detention center. Deputies identified the other inmate as 25-year-old Dwayne Stafford, who is in jail awaiting trial for assault and robbery charges. An incident report said Stafford left his own cell, ran down to the first-floor showers and began hitting Roof around 7:45 a.m.
Two detention officers separated the pair. The sheriff said Roof and his attorney indicated they did not wish to file charges against Stafford.
Cannon said normally other cell doors in the facility are supposed to be locked whenever Roof is allowed out into the housing areas. But it was not clear how Stafford was able to get out. The sheriff said they are checking to see if a lock failed, but he said complacency among staff may have been a factor. He noted one officer had left to bring toilet paper to another inmate, while the other had “taken a break,” although he could not clarify at this stage of the investigation.
“It certainly serves as a wakeup call to all of us concerned,” he told reporters during a briefing about the incident.
