Lexington County officials have identified a River Bluff High School football player who died shortly after collapsing at his team’s practice Wednesday night.
The county coroner’s office said 14-year-old Lewis Simpkins was pronounced dead after arriving at a hospital. An autopsy was planned later Thursday.
A Lexington County School District One spokeswoman said the rising sophomore collapsed around 7 p.m. Wednesday as River Bluff players were wrapping up practice. Athletic trainers unsuccessfully attempted CPR and a defibrillator on Simpkins before EMS arrived at the school. It was not immediately clear why the teen had dropped.
The State newspaper reports Simpkins had played with River Bluff’s freshman and junior varsity squads last season. He was listed as a defensive tackle on the team roster.
River Bluff has canceled its team practice Thursday and will instead hold a private gathering in the afternoon. The school will provide counselors and psychiatrists for the players. Classes are not scheduled to start until next week. Lexington District One said the team will not participate in the Lexington County Sportsarama on Friday.
