South Carolina’s first family reported an income of $170,661 last year, about $20,000 less than it had in 2014, according to Gov. Nikki Haley’s tax returns for the last two years released Friday.
The Haleys earned $144,578 in 2015, down about $20,000 from 2014. The reason was because First Gentleman Michael Haley, a captain with the South Carolina National Guard, became part-time.
According to the Post and Courier, as governor, Haley has an annual salary of around $106,000. Michael’s taxable income last year was $51,000, since becoming part-time.
The couple’s income was at its pinnacle in $280,000 after the release of the governor’s 2012 book “Can’t is Not an Option. Haley had said she would donate the proceeds from the book to her charity Original Six Foundation.
Investment income from a real estate loan for the Haley’s was $19,187, which listed the governor’s father Dr. Ajit Randhawa in 2015. A related amount was listed on the same investment in 2014.
