Vice President Joe Biden will make a stop in South Carolina next month as he campaigns for a former staffer.
Biden will visit the White Homestead in Fort Mill on Sept. 12 to stump for Fran Person, a former Gamecock football player who is running as a Democrat for the Fifth Congressional District currently held by two time incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney.
Person will host a campaign fundraiser at the home where Biden will be a key speaker. The event is not open to the general public, but individuals can purchase tickets to the event for at least $250. The Rock Hill Herald reports that, so far, Person has out raised the incumbent Mulvaney in the campaign.
Biden has made numerous visits to South Carolina as vice president. In addition to several public speeches and campaign events, the Biden family also has a vacation home on Kiawah Island near Charleston.
The Fifth District includes most of York and Lancaster County and much of its population lives in the southern Charlotte suburbs. The district has predominately voted Republican in the last decade but recent polls showing a close race between presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in South Carolina suggest that historic voting trends in the state are not as strong as in past elections.
Fran Person lives in Tega Cay and came to South Carolina as a football recruit under football coach Lou Holtz. He played on the offensive line during Steve Spurrier’s inaugural season. For several years after college, Person worked as an aide to Biden and says he traveled to over 49 countries with the vice president.
