Hanahan Police have charged a man with DUI after they said he parked his car at a railroad crossing, leading to a collision with an Amtrak train early Monday morning.
Police said 54-year-old Hung Tran got out of his vehicle before the Amtrak Auto Train passed through the intersection. Tran was not hurt and Amtrak said no one on the train was injured.
According to a police report, Tran told a responding officer he mistakenly turned onto the tracks while traveling along Eagle Landing Boulevard in Hanahan. Tran said he saw the train coming and attempted to alert the operator to stop.
Officers said Tran had a blood alcohol content of 0.15, nearly double South Carolina’s legal limit of 0.08. He was charged with DUI, according to Berkeley County court records. WCIV-TV in Charleston reports he was freed later Monday on a $1,224 bond.
Amtrak said its train was able to resume its trip a few hours after the collision.
