Exports of goods produced in the metropolitan Charleston area topped a record $6.5 billion during 2015, according to a new International Trade Administration report.
The region’s produced exports increased by $591 million from 2014 to 2015, or 10.1 percent, according to the 2015 Metropolitan Area Export Overview.
According to the Charleston Post and Courier, the Charleston-North Charleston area is 45th nationally for the value of exported goods and was one of 63 areas nationwide to set export records last year.
Nearly two-thirds of all exports are transportation-related, including the 787 Dreamliners that Boeing makes in North Charleston.
Exports from the Charleston area have soared by 344 percent since Boeing opened up shop in North Charleston in 2009, although that could also be do to an overall national economy that has rebounded since the recession ended that year.
