Three teenage boys are arrested for the shooting and killing a man in front of his daughter in North Charleston.
While playing a game of soccer Tuesday afternoon with his 5-year-old daughter in the front lawn of his home in North Charleston, Orlando Benitez Martinez was jumped, shot and killed with a 40-caliber handgun.
“As he lay dying on the ground, the suspects went through his pockets, took his wallet. All of this happened in front of his child,” says Zumalt.
North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt says after two days of investigation, police officers, detectives and Hispanic community leaders worked together to make the arrest of three teenage suspects. All three black male suspects–17, 18 and 19 years old–live in the same Hawthorne Mobile Home Park as Martinez. Zumalt says Martinez may have been the target because of the amount of cash Hispanics are known to carry. Mayor Keith Summey commends the police department but isn’t showing any mercy on the suspects.
“To be murdered in front of your child, take no consideration at all for what’s going on with these children, that is inhumane,” says Summey.
One of the three suspects, Anthony Brown, was already on probation for robbery. The shooting is still under investigation.
