You might call it a world competition. That is a competition about the world around us. The South Carolina state finals of the National Geographic Bee took place at the State Museum in Columbia, and the top three were: Matthew White, Forest Lake Elementary in Columbia; Allen Simmons of Shannon First Christian School in Greenville; and Luke Porter, Glenburg School in Forest Acres.
Finalist and elementary school student Matthew White says it took some discipline to prepare: “I’d study about a few hours for several days and then I would just stop and try to relax.”
He’s just glad the other two, who are eighth graders, will be out of his way next year.
About the pressure of being questioned on an auditorium stage, the contestants seemed to take it in stride.
Second place winner, Allen Simmons says, “Its really not that hard just it really takes some time to come to you but otherwise, it’s like taking a test.”
South Carolina champ, Luke Porter and his family travel to Washington,DC for the national bee — on May 19 and 20.
