“We lost nine of the bravest men doing what they love to do best, fight fire. Those guys were the best,” says former Charleston Fire Chief Rusty Thomas.
Thomas spoke at a ceremony two years ago honoring the nine fallen firefighters killed in the line of duty fighting a fire at the Sofa Super Store in Charleston.
Tonight, new chief Thomas Carr and the Charleston Fire Department will come together for another memorial to remember these men. The Memorial site on Savannah Highway will be open to the public from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
There will be a private time for the family of the fallen before the public will gather at the site. Chief Carr will read off the names of each of the “Charleston Nine” with a ringing of a bell after each name is announced.
The Sofa Super Store tragedy marked the greatest loss of firefighters since 9/11.
