The search is still on for an individual or individuals that shot and robbed a taxi driver in Newberry County on July 27. The suspects left the driver for dead in a ditch and stole his cab. Local Law Enforcement are looking to the public for help. Major Todd Johnson of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department says any information could be essential in solving this case.
“At this point, we’re following up on several leads,” said Major Johnson. “None of them seem to be the type that are case-breakers and so we are desperately crying out to the public for anyone who might have information about this case to come forward and assist us in bringing these suspects to justice.”
Johnson says his county is notorious for being safe. “We have earned the reputation as the safest county in South Carolina, ” he said.
“We have an extremely high clearance rate and I believe we will be able to track these men down eventually, but we need the support of the community and the support of someone who may have information to assist us and make this possible.”
The victim is still in critical condition. According to Johnson,. “He just underwent a third surgery yesterday morning. He is in serious condition and still in the hospital. He is still on a ventilator and we remain concerned about his condition.”
He does not have insurance so a fund has been set up locally to help him with his medical bills. “The victim doesn’t have insurance and does have a family,” said Johnson.
“A fund has been set up in the name of the taxi company that he was working for to protect his identity, that is C and C Commute. If anyone would like to contribute to that to help offset medical bills and keep supporting the family during this time of need for them, they may do so by going to the Wachovia branch here in Newberry.”
