Officials at The Dorn VA Medical Center are asking anyone with flu symptoms or who has been exposed to the flu to refrain from visiting the veterans facility in Columbia. Officials are also restricting anyone under age 18 from visiting until the flu season is over. Children may be allowed to visit the hospice patients on a case by case basis.
The steps are designed to limit the spread of the seasonal flu, as well as the H1N1 swine flu. The VA facility is a 172-bed hospital and outpatient clinic, which see about 650 patients every day. Hospitals across the state are restricting visitation because of the threat of the swine flu.
