The Union County Council are meeting Tuesday night to discuss what to do following the resignation of the county supervisor and county clerk.
The Union County Legislative Delegation is present to help the council come up with recommendations to fill Supervisor Donnie Betenbaugh and Clerk of Court Brad Morris’ positions. The governor has the right to appoint people to the positions. Federal indictments were handed down against Betenbaugh, and former Tax Assessor Willie Randall Jr.,and former Sheriff Howard Wells. SLED is now investigating the clerk of court’s office and alleged irregularities with child support payments.
Betenbaugh and the former Tax Assessor were named in a 40-count indictment charging them with conspiracy, extortion, soliciting and accepting bribes, money laundering, and knowingly allowing the Tax Assessor’s Office to be used as a “stash house” for the storage and distribution of cocaine and a prescription pain killer.
Wells is charged with lying to investigators and witness tampering related to some large loans that authorities say he made to an individual.
The indictments came out of a corruption probe that sent former Union Mayor Bruce Morgan and former Union Building and Zoning director Jeffrey Lawson to federal prison.
