There were some tense moments around Withrop University in Rock Hill Friday morning. Shortly after 10 o’clock, an armed gunman entered the Palmetto Bank near the school but fled the scene after a teller screamed. Police were searching for the suspect which led to a temporary lockdown of nearby Ebenezer Avenue Elementary and Winthrop.
Assistant to the President of Public Affairs at Winthrop Rebecca Masters says, “Reports from campus and beyond indicate that everything went well with our notification system. Winthrop in the past few years has installed beacons and alarms in our buildings that indicate what fist action should be taken. Text and voice mail messages went out as well.”
City officials declared the area safe soon after that. The subject is still at large.
