Belk, Inc., is giving a boost to the Port of Charleston.
The Charlotte-based company which operates more than 300 department stores across the Southeast, has begun importing more than 1,000 shipping containers annually through the Charleston port.
Port officials say that improves the local impact for dock workers, transportation providers and warehouse workers.Belk officials say moving their freight through Charleston instead of using other ports offers a cost savings on transportation.
The goods will be transported from Charleston to Belk’s distribution centers located in Blythewood, near Columbia, and in Jackson, Mississippi.
The logistics and delivery company called Performance Team, based in Goose Creek, has worked with Belk for ten years. A Performance Team official says the Charleston port has the deepest water in the Southeast region and he sees a great future in the port, or they wouldn’t be using it.
Belk is the largest privately owned mainline department store company in the U.S.
