The South Carolina Education oversight committee has recommended cutting out a stipend for the states Board certified teachers– that will be up to the legislature that convenes again soon.
The state ranks among the best in the nation for National Board Certification. This year’s new certified class of 799 educators brings the state’s total to 7,297, which is the third highest in the country behind North Carolina and Florida. South Carolina 2009 Teacher of the Year, Jenna Hallman. The state Education Oversight Committee has recommended that the legislature cut out the $7500 stipend for those teachers.

“It keeps them there instead of moving on to administration or to other fields where they could possibly make more money,” says Hallman.
Twenty nine school districts had at least 10 teachers to earn the nation top teaching certification. Horry County was the most with 76 teachers earn the designation,
The legislature will take up the stipend issue when it returns in January.
