Senator Jim DeMint has risen as a popular target for what some would call, “the liberal left” and he’s speaking out as a supporter of the Tea Party movement. The movement grew out of anti-tax protests and arose in response to the increase in the national debt resulting from the stimulus package. DeMint says the Tea Party is helping unite and remake the Republican Party.
“If I didn’t get a lot of support when I came home to South Carolina I would start wondering if I were right or not. Everywhere I go in South Carolina people thank me for fighting. I think the Tea Party movement is the best thing that has happened to our country in a long time. Our country should be run by the people and not politicians. I’ve been in those crowds and they’re the cross-section of America,” says DeMint.
Another Republican that has been in the light of criticism lately is Sarah Palin. Palin spoke at a National Tea Party convention saying “this isn’t about money; this isn’t about a title. I will live, I will die for the people of America. Whatever I can do to help. This movement is the future of politics in America.” Senator DeMint says the attacks on Palin could be jealousy.
“A lot of people are jealous of her because she’s probably the only Republican in the country that people want to listen to right now. I think she has held up real well to the terrible media attacks that she has had. She’s just an accomplished woman who speaks well. I’ve never met her, but I’m pretty proud of her courage and she seems to be doing real well out there. So, we’ll see what happens,” says DeMint.
