Memorial Day weekend officially marks the beginning of summer when water activities go into full swing, but some of those water activities turned deadly.
Officials say a teenager died in a Darlington City public pool and another child was injured on Saturday. Lifeguards cleared the pool because of bad weather and once the pool was empty workers discovered two people on the bottom of the deep end. The Morning News of Florence reported that 13-year-old Justin McKay was pronounced dead and another child was taken to a local hospital. It was the first day the pool was open for the summer season.
Also on Saturday, Ted Allaire, age 32, died from injuries while tubing on Lake Keowee when he fell off the inner tube he was riding on behind a boat and hit a dock. Allaire died from multiple injuries.
Sunday evening, a 16 year old boy was walking across the Langley Pond Dam in Aiken, then began to struggle after entering the water. Da’than S. Harris drowned even though a rescue attempt by a passerby was unsuccessful.
Officials are investigating.
