In Newberry, deputies are investigating what they are calling a “brutal homicide.” Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster spoke to our affiliate KDK in Newberry from the crime scene.
An individual found a body near Pomaria Garmany Elementary School on U.S. 176. It was obvious from the officers there that the body had met a violent demise and the injuries were more than being struck by an automobile. We followed a forensic trail that took us back to Orchard Trailer Park. We began to hail him and try and get him to come out and he refused to come out.
The body was found around 4:30 Wednesday morning. Foster says once they followed a trail of evidence, they believed the suspect to be heavily armed. SWAT teams were then called in.
It was shortly thereafter that we began to try to negotiate with him. He refused to respond either by telephone or by PA. We then introduced tear gas into the house and the individual came out shortly thereafter.
Suspect Gregory Collins is in custody and the investigation continues. SLED is assisting in the investigation.
