The state Democratic Party Executive Committee threw out the election results in the Lee County Council District 4 in Bishopville Precinct 1. The precinct ended up with 107 percent turnout. Four-term Lee County councilman Gordon Eckley, who lost his reelection bid to Matt Bramlett by 73 votes, found out that of the 242 votes cast, 131 were illegal. Eckley appealed the results.
Lee County Director of Voter Registration Lynn Fata acknowledged that mistakes were made at the polling place. The Bishopville No. 1 precinct also has voters in Districts 3 and 4. Fata said the poll workers are responsible for providing voters with the correct ballot. The state Democratic Party’s Executive Committee, after looking at the evidence, ordered a new election. The date for the new election has not been set.
