Twenty-five suspected illegal immigrants were detained Wednesday morning after arriving to work at a construction site at Shaw Air Force Base. Two were later identified as fugitives and are now in custody in Charleston. About 6:30 Wednesday morning, a sub-contractor attempted to bring the workers onto the base near Sumter. At the main gate, security personnel detected fraudulent identification and a lack of proper documentation.
Temple Black, an ICE spokesperson based in New Orleans, says agents questioned 25 workers with Palacio Drywall of Cornelius, North Carolina.
20th Fighter Wing Commander Charlie Moore says the Shaw security forces did great police work and paid close attention to details, as they are trained to do. Moore says,
Moore said that one outcome of the investigation would see Palacio Drywall being barred from future work on the base.
