Governor Mark Sanford will be in two different Upstate towns today, with similar duties in each. At 11:00 a.m., Sanford will be in Greer to launch and tour the new ASTRA/CFX plant. The company built the facility to provide the wheel and tire assembly for BMW’s new X3 sports activity vehicles which will be built at the German company’s factory in Greer.
Then the governor will head to Abbeville for a 2:30 p.m. ceremony to officially open a new pipe manufacturing plant. Independent Pipe Products will make high-density polyethylene pipes and will be one of only four factories in the country to make large HDPE pipes.
Both grand openings are hoped to help the economies of those towns. Sanford will also likely tout last week’s announcement that German auto supplier Z-F Group will open a major transmission plant in Laurens County.
