Gaffney police say that a mother has been charged with child neglect after leaving her children in a hot car.
Monica Miranda Palacios, age 37 of Gaffney, was charged Wednesday with three counts of child neglect after she left her baby and two young children in a hot car while she shopped at Walmart. News Channel 4 reports that a customer notified store security that there were three small children in a car in the parking lot.
Store personnel tried unsuccessfully for 40 minutes to get the vehicle open. A store customer was able to open the vehicle with a Slim Jim shortly before police arrived. Palacios eventually came out of the store and–speaking through a translator–told officers she didn’t think she would be in the store that long.
The children were taken into custody by the Department of Social Services. The children’s ages range from 4 months to 6 years old.
