Last month, Senator Lindsey Graham’s announcement gave some of the state’s airports a financial boost to make improvements and create jobs. On July 13, Graham announced more than $10 million in federal grants to be disbursed to state airports in Anderson, Charleston, Chesterfield, Darlington, Greenville, Horry, Laurens, Lexington and Sumter.
Nearly $3.5 million is going to the Berkeley County Airport for a face-lift, which officials say would attract more jobs. The face-lift plan includes improving the airport’s drainage and lighting. Boeing’s new facility is being built near Berkeley County, and Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis says an airport near a plant site is often a key factor in attracting a new industry. According to Davis, an airport that supports business jets is very important.
