Construction on a busy part of I-26 in Charleston is ahead of schedule. Between North Charleston and Charleston, right at the merge of Interstate-526, construction crews are working on widening the stretch of highway to ease the flow of traffic.
The project, that started about 24 months ago, is currently ahead of schedule and expected to be completed before its June 18, 2011 deadline. The South Carolina Department of Transportation says they are about 75 percent done with the expansion, which puts them about seven percent ahead of previous projections for this time of year. The I-26 project costs $66 million to complete. If, however, the deadline is not met, the lead contractor, U.S. Group Inc. will face a penalty of $8,000 a day.
