Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster is warning people of a phone scam. The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office says they have received a large number of phone calls, mostly from senior citizens. Apparently someone is calling, hoping to trick them into believing that they are an officer speaking on behalf of the victim’s loved one, saying that the loved one is in jail and needs money to get out. But Foster says it’s just a scam. Foster says, “For most, protection of their family is one of the most fundamental instincts and scam artists know this and use it to their advantage.”
Foster says if a person receives a call saying that a relative is in jail, then the person receiving the call should ask for as much information as possible including the name of the jail, the telephone number of the facility, the name of the officer he or she is speaking with and the physical location of the jail.
