Jim DeMint’s candidate won the Senate GOP primary for Delaware last night. Christine O’Donnell, with DeMints backing and money, will vie for for Joe Biden’s vacated Senate seat. But the mainstream of the party has been cautious about supporting the Tea Party favorite. DeMint told Fox News today that he recognizes that this divides the party… in Washington.
So what we’re doing in Washington is polarizing the people here, but it’s uniting America around a common platform of constitutional limited government, free people, free markets, Judeo-Christian values, simple concepts that I don’t consider political; I just consider them the core principals that made our country great.
Republican strategist Karl Rove, even after the election, questioned O’Donnell’s character. But DeMint stood behind her and some other anti-mainstream candidates in his party.
FOX News asked DeMint if helping finance these new candidates in the Senate will lead to his run for the White House. His response:
No, I’m looking for someone who will be a combination of Reagan and Churchill. Someone needs to tell Americans the truth that the federal government needs to do less, rather than more. Someone like Churchill who’ll say, “We’re going to have to sacrifice, but we’re going to come out better than we’ve been before.”
DeMint says it is unwise for the party, at this point, to look ahead to 2012.
