An employee of Hemingway town hall has been charged with embezzling the town’s money. Hemingway is a town of approximately 600 residents in Williamsburg County.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) says 48-year-old Tammy Nobles, a town clerk, is accused of stealing more than $15,000 to pay personal bills.
Hemingway Town Manager Joe Lee says a problem was found during a regular audit.
The money was missing. They came in checked and found missing money, then started auditing various accounts. The police department was notified, they notified SLED and SLED took it over from there. It’s unfortunate. That’s all I can say about it. It’s just very, very, very unfortunate.
Lee says Noble has been working as a clerk for three years.
Nobles has turned herself into SLED, which is investigating the case at the request of the Hemingway Police Department.
