Lexington County Senator Jake Knotts has been ordered to repay $24,000 in illegal campaign contributions. The Senate Ethics Committee ruled that Knotts accepted individual campaign contributions that exceeded the legal limit.
News Channel 10 reports that Knotts inaccurately reported contributions on disclosure reports, missing some $26,000 in contributions, and also didn’t report close to $17,000 in interest earned on campaign accounts. The committee says the Republican didn’t report an $8,000 personal loan to his campaign as well as $11,000 in campaign expenditures.
The Committee reprimanded Knotts and told him he must amend his campaign finance reports and develop a better system to keep up with contributions. The committee found no evidence that Knotts used the campaign money for himself.
