Former Beaufort County Clerk of Court Elizabeth Smith has been indicted by the US Attorney for unlawful conversion of public funds. Smith is accused of diverting $68,500 in federal child support money to pay the judicial salary of a family member working for the Beaufort County Drug Court, which at the time was being run by her husband. If convicted of these federal charges, Smith faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Smith was found guilty Tuesday of county charges of embezzlement and misconduct in office for using public money for personal use. She was sentenced to probation and community service.
